A brilliant rosy deep-dive that leave me feeling like I’ve been inside Alma-Tadema’s beautiful ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus’ painting! xx

Thank you! Ah yes that painting perfectly sums up what it is not just to love a rose fragrance, but to inhabit it! 🌹 xx

What a wonderful piece, thank you. It has pushed me over the edge & I’ve subscribed.

You have reminded me to use up my numerous samples of Tobacco Rose.

May I add a couple more?

LAP Voleur de Roses. Scorched earthiness, overblown deep purple roses with a smudge of the sour tartness of perspiring bodies. It’s how burlesque dressing rooms should smell.

Amouage Lyric Woman, another Amouage rose. Again so purple, she’s invisible in the dark but lit with the classic Omani frankincense used in Guidance 46. A bit less demanding on the purse strings too.

I am waiting for my bottle of 4160 Tuesdays x Tempest Rose perfume. You mentioning burlesque reminded me that it should be on its way soon. If you are up for taking a chance, they may have some left. (I have no commercial link with either party to this collaboration but I am a huge fan of Sarah McCartney's work).

I’m waiting too. Did you join the Crowdfunder too?

I also love Amouage's Lyric - rose but somehow sleazy and a million miles away from Epic, which does not belong in this company at all IMO.

This was fabulous! Thank you so much for not keeping it behind the paywall (although oooft it’d be well deserved!) I love BDK’s Tabac Rose and was considering it for my wedding in two weeks (eeeek!) but have decided to go for my favourite Diptyque Eau Rose in the EDP strength. Not the smoky rose of BDK but still deliciously autumnal!

Thank you for making this incredible content available. I am a huge fan of your writing and where I live in South Africa we don't get most of the fragrances that you so beautifully write about, so it is an utter treat to get lost in the perfume world you so eloquently describe.

I'm so glad you included Firedance. Such an amazing, complex, unusual perfume. I also love Incense Water. Smoky rose is such a wonderful perfume genre. I definitely have to track down a sample of Source. And am pleased to say my 16 year old son has just discovered Toy Boy and loves it!

So glad to know you love smoky roses, too, Anne! And yes, Firedance is quite incredible. Thrilled your son has discovered Toy Boy. This was a surprise hit for me!

Firedance is the weirdest perfume I've ever smelled. I had to keep taking more sniffs of it to check that, yes it really does smell like that. I thought it had a slightly medicinal note and - I hope this doesn't put anyone off - the smoke reminded me somewhat of ham. It shouldn't work, but it does.

Thank you for these recommendations. I'm going to try the Rose Oudgasm next, which sounds as if it will be more mainstream. I think I probably need to try the Moschino too ... ... what lovely treats you suggest for us!!

It’s funny you should say that about Firedance, because actually that’s not an uncommon reaction to some overtly smoky scents. I had a really interesting conversation with Leo (founder of Beaufort) about this. He said some people react to their smoky fragrances and say they remind them of barbecues or smoked meats! I don’t get that association, but I totally understand what you mean. And yes do check out the Kayali and Moschino. I think you’d find the Sana Jardin the most gentle smoked rose of all these I’ve included here. X

I bought Rose Oudgasm for a friend for Christmas and I'm wishing I'd also bought some for myself - the 10ml size is quite affordable. Thanks for the recommendation 🙏🙏🙏

I love your descriptions! I want to try every single one but am really curious about Firedance. I went online to order but doesn’t look like they ship to the States.
